Course Description & Rationale

This course provides students with the opportunity for in-depth study of the concepts and processes that occur in biological systems. Students will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of biochemistry, metabolic processes, molecular genetics, homeostasis, and population dynamics. Emphasis will be placed on the achievement of detailed knowledge and the refinement of skills needed for further study in various branches of the life sciences and related fields.

The purpose of Science at Guido de Brès is to develop students’ ability to be reflective, critical, and creative thinkers, as well as discerning believers, who can apply their knowledge to the world around them. This involves developing a sense of awe for the ordered and intricate nature of Creation while understanding the potentials and limitations of Creation and of science’s ability to explain and use it. Students will develop their understanding of the relationships between science, technology, and society. There will be an emphasis on personal responsibility in making wise decisions regarding the use of nature, science and technology for ethical and stewardly reasons – in using them to God’s glory. Through all of this, students will be encouraged to have a curiosity, intrigue and enjoyment in studying God’s Creation, especially as it relates to the student’s everyday life.   In addition to these general goals, Biology 12 will also encourage students to: 

  • Discuss God’s guiding hand in discoveries
  • Tentativeness of theories
  • Role of bias in interpreting results
  • Discuss the visible vs. invisible reality
  • analyze the stewardly use of genetic technologies – good & bad
  • recognize God’s providence in maintaining our body systems
